Broadview, which is part of Qualico Group of Companies, was crowned Builder of the Year, and Avi Urban won the Multi-Family Builder of the Year title at the Canadian Home Builders’ Association-Urban Development Institute Calgary Region Association SAM (Sales and Marketing) Awards.

The SAM Awards are an annual competition highlighting the top performances in home design, renovation, community development, sales and marketing.

Fifty-eight trophies were awarded during a gala event celebrating winners from last year’s competition at the Telus Convention Centre on Saturday night. Broadview and Avi Urban won Grand SAM Awards, two of five overall awards that recognize excellence in a variety of categories.

The other three Grand SAM awards went to McKinley Masters for Builder of Merit, Renova Luxury Renovations for Renovator of the Year, and Wildwood Cabinets was named Partner of the Year.

Broadview Homes’ win follows back-to-back years where Morrison Homes picked up the top builder title.

“It’s over-the-moon excitement,” says Broadview’s vice-president Peter-John Woolf.

Broadview also won awards in three categories for single-family homes this year.

“We’ll never lose sight of what the public has been buying but we’re constantly putting new things into it. We’ll constantly take chances,” Woolf says.

The company builds in eight Calgary area communities, including, within city limits, Evanston, Redstone and Beacon Heights. In the Calgary area, Broadview builds in Harmony, Airdrie, Chestermere, Langdon and Okotoks.

Avi Urban won in two individual categories, including one for its townhome development the Willow at Sherwood. The company has developments in various stages of sales and construction in five Calgary communities.

“We spent a lot of time getting the right positions … and put everything we could into getting the right feel and the right design for our developments,” says Avi Urban president Charron Ungar. “This is a great feeling.”

SAM awards in community categories went to Legacy in southeast Calgary, Symons Gate in the northwest and Riversong in Cochrane.

Legacy, which is by WestCreek Developments, was named Community of the year-City of Calgary. This followed a three-year winning streak in the category by Mahogany.

Symons Gate by Brookfield Residential was crowned New Community of the Year and Riversong by Tamani Communities picked up the Community of Year-Calgary Region trophy.

Mahogany was also recognized with the Show Home Parade of the Year award.
