6. Shanghai World Financial Center



 Known for its intricate, curved architectural design, the Shanghai World Financial Center is 1,614 feet and cost about 1.2 billion dollars to complete. The architecture won many awards at the time of its completion in 2008.

5. Taipei 101



 Completed in 2004, it was the world's tallest skyscraper for 6 years before being outsized in 2010 by the current number 1 skyscraper. Used for office space, the building stands at 1,670 feet.

4. One World Trade Center



 As a way of commemorating the lives lost during the September 11 attacks, the 1 WTC began construction in 2006 and has recently opened. The building was designed by the firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and cost almost 4 billion dollars to complete. It is destined to become another national landmark.

3. Mecca Royal Hotel Clock Tower



Also known as "Abraj Al Bait," the clock tower was completed in 2012 and is 1,971 feet tall. It also holds the titles of "world's tallest clock tower" and "world's largest clock face." It is located in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

2. Shanghai Tower



One of two towers to reach over 2000 feet, this tower is estimated at being completed some time in 2014. Designed by the American firm Gensler, the building will have over 120 floors.

1.  Burj Khalifa



At 2,722 feet, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai is the world's tallest tower. It has 163 floors and the building has a variety of uses. The official launch in 2010 was met with a celebration of fireworks and light sequences. The architecture has won many awards, including an International Architecture Award in the same year the building was launched. It may be years before another building surpasses it.
